40 Day Devotional, Day 31: Pure Religion

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

(James 1:27 NIV)

James exhorts followers of Jesus to care for some of the most powerless, marginalized people of his day: orphans and widows.

He knew that works couldn’t save you, but James contended that one’s deeds are both evidence of faith and an expression of it. “Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds” (James 2:18).

ACTION: Reflect. Who are the powerless and destitute whom God might be calling you to look after? How would serving them be an expression of your faith?

  1. Thank you for daily messages. It helps for me to look around others who may need help instead of focusing on myself.
