For some, Mother’s Day is a day of celebration; for others, a day of lament or hopeful anticipation.
God, as we celebrate mothers today,
We thank You for your deep love for us.
You are the Giver of life.
Our divine parent.
You model unconditional love and sacrifice.
You nurture your children and discipline us out of Your desire for us to grow.
You knit us together in our mother’s womb, fearfully and wonderfully made.
You created us in Christ to do good works which You have prepared in advance for us to do, and You chose mothers to bring us into this world.
We thank You for our earthly mothers, who carried us and delivered us, who have sacrificed out of their love for us.
We thank You for the mother figures in our lives: grandmothers, aunts, neighbors, friends, godly women who shower us with love and care,
who generously share their wisdom with us,
who teach us and equip us to live this life,
who treat us when we’re sick,
who protect us from harm,
who watch over our own children when we can’t.
And Lord, as we honor mothers and mother figures today, we recognize the pain of this day as well.
God, comfort those who have lost their mother, comfort mothers who grieve the loss of a child.
Bless those who desire to be mothers themselves but have not yet been given a chance.
We pray for all who struggle to become parents.
Grant them Your peace, Lord, and Your favor through fertility treatments and adoption.
We pray for fractured relationships between mothers and their children.
May there be healing, forgiveness, and reconciliation.
May there be a restoration of trust and the love You intended for mothers and children.
And for all young mothers, guide them by Your Spirit, Lord.
Give them the wisdom, strength, and patience they need.
The wisdom and patience You show us daily, God.
Thank you for making us Your children by adoption; co-heirs with Christ, by Whom we call you, “Abba.”
May we surrender ourselves to you daily, Lord, as we grow in trust and childlike faith in You.
In Jesus’ name we pray.
Amen.
